PHL architects to celebrate World Architecture Day on October 3
World Architecture Day is celebrated every first Monday of October. This year, it falls on October 3, and on that day the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) will be holding an event at its headquarters in Quezon City.
"Design a Better World" will be the theme of the event, which will focus on the role of architecture in providing a better future for people and creating solutions to global challenges through effective design.
A role in alleviating human suffering
World Architecture Day was established in 2005 by the International Union of Architects (UIA), which represents over 1.3 million architects in 124 countries.
"As the range of global challenges grows and intensifies, the role of architecture, planning and design are becoming ever more critical to ensuring a better future for all people," the UIA said on its website, explaining this year's theme.
"UIA calls upon all architecture organizations everywhere to highlight the essential role of design in alleviating human suffering, reducing planetary burdens, and enhancing the quality of life."
The UIA announced that its members and partners—which includes the UAP—will "promote the enormous power of architecture to cope with climate change, and to foster communicates that are strong, safe, equitable, productive and affordable" on World Architecture Day.
As part of its celebration of the day, the UAP invited architects and architecture students to take a photo of an area's particular problem and overlay a sketch solution on the photo. Submissions will be judged and the winning entry will receive a cash prize.
